Effects of Cold Stress on the Photosynthesis and Antioxidant System of Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall.

Abstract: Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall., live in Changbai Mountain being exposed to chilling temperature, high light intensities and water scarcity condition. To adapt to the harsh environment, the cold resistance mechanisms of R. chrysanthum have been successfully evolved in the long-term adaptive process. In our present work, the methods of proteomics combined with physiological and biochemical analyses were used to investigate the effects of cold stress on the photosynthesis and antioxidant system of Rhododendron ch… Show more

“…Another function of glutathione peroxidase is that it can eliminate H 2 O 2 and lipid hydroperoxides using glutathione, which will lead to reduced oxidative damage and enhanced tolerance to abiotic stresses (Halušková et al, 2009). It has also been shown to be an important cold-responsive protein, which significantly increases cold stress tolerance of plants (Zhou et al, 2017). Here, only one gene was found in the photosynthesis module.…”

“…The specific terms, as well as the list of genes and statistical confidence levels, can be found in the Supplementary Table 2 . In the analysis with the PPI network, the 26 new terms associated with “Frost day frequency in Spring” include “Photosynthesis” as an adaptation to cold stress [ 38 ] and “Trichoblast maturation”, which happens in low phosphate condition [ 39 ] in need for cold tolerance [ 40 ]. Terms related to response to starvation and homeostasis linked to cold response [ 41 , 42 ] were identified with or without the PPI network.…”

“…Low temperature is one of the leading causes of chloroplast structure destruction, disrupting photosynthesis in plants (Kingston‐Smith et al, 1997). Zhou et al (2017) also showed that cold stress damaged the photosynthetic apparatus of Rhododendron chrysanthemum Pall plants and ceased photochemical activities.…”

“…Both stomatal and nonstomatal factors can affect the photosynthesis at low temperatures; that is, cold stress could affect the stomatal activity and carbon metabolism enzymes. Although low temperatures could denature the photosynthetic proteins, the expression of those proteins is enhanced in the cold‐tolerant plants (Zhou et al, 2017). Photosynthesis reduction in sensitive plants is depended on the rate and duration of cold temperature (Lukatkin et al, 2012), which is related to reducing chloroplast efficiency, the quantum yield of PSI and PSII, and ATP synthase (Allen & Ort, 2001).…”
