The aim of this study was to help drive the Tunisian construction industry towards a more sustainable approach given the existence of abundant local raw material deposits that could be exploited for the production of low-CO2 binders. Various clay sediments from the Kebili region (southern Tunisia) were characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and geotechnical tests to determine their suitability for the preparation of geopolymer binders. The clays consist of illite and kaolinite with other accessory minerals. To test the possibility of using these materials as precursors for the production of low-CO2 and low-cost geopolymers, the raw samples were calcined and activated by addition of solid sodium silicate. Compressive strength tests performed on four alkali-activated clays show that promising mechanical performance may be achieved, with mechanical strength values as high as 25 MPa after 7 days, depending on the clay composition. The mechanical strength is related to the SiO2:Al2O3 and Al2O3:(NaO2 + K2O) ratios. Careful selection of the raw materials is, therefore, an essential step in the exploitation of clay deposits to be used for the production of ecological materials such as geopolymers.

When the effect of two soil erosion features, in this study, gully headcuts (GHs) and pipe collapses (PCs), is investigated jointly, a new comprehensive concept related to their controlling factors can be found. The objective of this paper to evaluate susceptibility to these two features in the hilly region of the Golestan Province (NE Iran), which may be helpful in land management and the sustainable development of the region. The maps of the controlling factors of GHs and PCs were constructed and the random forest algorithm was used to prioritize the factors controlling the occurrence of these two soil erosion features. The GHs and PCs susceptibility maps were prepared using the random forest model in the R software and validated applying the receiver operating characteristic curves, fourfold plot, and Cohen's kappa index, whereas the susceptibility map of the two soil erosion features was prepared by overlapping these maps. The results of factor importance analysis have indicated that land use, slope, and silt content are the most important factors in the occurrence of PCs, whereas slope gradient, silt content, and distance to streams are the most important in GHs occurrence. This means that steep and uncultivated slopes in the study area are most susceptible to GHs and PCs. The susceptibility models of GHs and PCs have excellent accuracy, that is, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of GHs and PCs models were 0.960 and 0.935, respectively. The susceptibility map of GHs and PCs analysed jointly has shown that 66% of the area is not susceptible to any of these soil erosion features, whereas 15% is susceptible to both of them. The places susceptible to the two types of soil erosion features (GHs and PCs) indicate the areas where there is a high probability of GHs retreat due to the PCs. This study has confirmed that it is feasible to forecast the spatial behaviour of GHs and PCs occurrence and development. This is particularly preferred when the developed methods are applied for the susceptibility evaluation under various mitigation scenarios.

Analysis of human exposure to landslides with a GIS multiscale approach

Decision-making plays a key role in reducing landslide risk and preventing natural disasters. Land management, recovery of degraded lands, urban planning, and environmental protection in general are fundamental for mitigating landslide hazard and risk. Here, we present a GIS-based multi-scale approach to highlight where and when a country is affected by a high probability of landslide occurrence. In the first step, a landslide human exposure equation is developed considering the landslide susceptibility triggered by rain as hazard, and the population density as exposed factor. The output, from this overview analysis, is a global GIS layer expressing the number of potentially affected people by month, where the monthly rain is used to weight the landslide hazard. As following step, Logistic Regression (LR) analysis was implemented at a national and local level. The Receiver Operating Characteristic indicator is used to understand the goodness of a LR model. The LR models are defined by a dependent variable, presence–absence of landslide points, versus a set of independent environmental variables. The results demonstrate the relevance of a multi-scale approach, at national level the biophysical variables are able to detect landslide hotspot areas, while at sub-regional level geomorphological aspects, like land cover, topographic wetness, and local climatic condition have greater explanatory power.
