With the wave of the pandemic in the recent years resulting in a sudden shift from offline learning to online learning sessions, assessments had been revised to adapt to the changes. This study was conducted with the aim of eliciting the lecturers’ and students’ perspectives on the difficulties faced by them in the implementation of online oral presentation in Malaysian English classrooms. This study employed a qualitative approach by interviewing 15 students and 6 instructors on the practice of online oral presentation assessments. The data were analysed employing thematic analysis. It was found that the challenges faced by the lecturers were in terms of providing feedback and number of students, while time management, practice arrangement, technical problems, and lack of feedback were the challenges faced by the students. This study recommends the faculty and the management to look into these issues so that both lecturers and students could optimise their time and materials for teaching and learning purposes. It is also suggested to consider the perspectives from the faculty and management for future research as they are the decision makers towards the curriculum.

Policies for increasing school completion rates for the poor

Human capital accumulated through education is a key factor in increasing individual income. Therefore, policies that aid in increasing school enrollment and completion rates among the poor are essential for poverty alleviation. Despite the fact that primary school enrollment rates in developing countries have increased, there remains a significant gap in school completion rates. This study focuses on the decisions individuals make regarding completing their education to obtain future job-related skills. We clarify factors that increase school enrollment and completion rates and indicate the effectiveness and priority of policies to increase the rates through a simple model. Our findings suggest that school policies have limited impact on increasing school enrollment and completion rates, particularly among the poor, who tend to have a high discount rate for the future and focus on the current situation. Therefore, policies that aim to reduce their discount rate should be prioritized. Moreover, we found that extending learning hours at school has a negative impact on the school completion rates of students from poor families. Therefore, policies aimed at improving individual learning environments are effective in increasing rates, especially for the poor. These findings have important implications for policymakers and education practitioners seeking to improve education outcomes and alleviate poverty, especially in developing countries.

Every year there will be thousands of students enrolling into universities. Before the starting of every semester, the head of department in all schools have a very important job which is deciding the numbers of classes/slots to be opened for every course and submit them to the Academic Affairs (HEA) office. The number of classes/slots for each course is determined based on the number of students enrolled for the course. Knowing the accurate number of classes/slots to be opened could help in allocating suitable lecture halls for each class/slot. This would then ensure the lecture halls are used to the fullest and the students would have a comfortable learning environment. The traditional method of counting the number of classes/slots manually course by course is rather troublesome and time consuming. Therefore, a web-based School of Computing (SOC) Course Slots Distribution System is developed to help solve the problem. The system aims to distribute the classes/slots for each course in BSc in Information Technology and BSc in Computer Science according to the number of students enrolled for the course. The system is developed using HTML, PHP and CSS. The system was then tested by the representatives of SOC management and evaluated based on user acceptance using an online survey platform – Google Form. The result of the evaluation suggested that the SOC Course Slots Distribution System is usable to assist the head of department of every school in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) to calculate the number of classes/slots to be opened for each course efficiently. The respondents also suggested for the system to have lab allocation as well for further improvement. With the help of this system, the workload of head of departments will greatly decrease.
