Effects of chemotherapy on invasion and metastasis of oral cavity cancer in mice

Abstract: Chemotherapy is effective not only for tumor diminution but also for inhibiting invasion and metastasis. In light of these effects, administration of anticancer drugs may be clinically useful in this regard.

“…They were housed and maintained in laminar flow cabinets under pathogen-free conditions. Oral SCC cells (KOSC2, HSC2 and OSC19; 2.0×10 5 cells/25 µl of serum-free culture medium) were injected into the lateral tongue with a microsyringe with a 27-gauge needle as outlined in a previous study [36]. The mice were weighed twice a week and housed until 14 days after the injection.…”

“…9 Kawashiri et al established the cervical lymph node metastatic cell line of oral carcinoma, known as OSC219, in 2001. 10 Qiu et al 11 orthotopically transplanted lymph node metastatic specimens of human tongue carcinoma into the tongues of nude mice and observed lymph node metastasis in that animal system. The establishment of these cell lines and animal tumor model has contributed to both fundamental and clinical research on carcinogenesis, and led to important developments and advances in prognosis of human tongue carcinoma.…”

“…In this model with OSC-19 cell lines, metastasis to the cervical lymph node was markedly inhibited by cisplatin or peplomycin and the combination of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and tumor resection. 35 , 36 Another experimental model of invasion and metastasis was built by orthotopic transplantation of HSC-2, HSC-3, and HSC-3 cell lines into tongue of nude mice. 37 …”
