Effects of Cement and Emulsified Asphalt on Properties of Mastics and 100% Cold Recycled Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract: Cold recycled asphalt mixtures (CRAM) are a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way to reuse reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). This paper evaluates the rheological properties and microstructure of mineral filler-asphalt mastic, mineral filler-residue mastic, and cement-residue mastic. Then, based on the premise of using 100% RAP with a gradation that was determined experimentally, the effects of emulsified asphalt and cement on the porosity, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio, dynamic st… Show more

“…After three days of molding, the above two ratios were 78% and 67%, respectively. Therefore, it can be seen that the cold recycled specimens prepared with emulsified high-viscosity asphalt showed better early-strength [41].…”

“…For this reason, several authors have characterised the mechanical behaviour of CRAM by using the complex modulus [9][10][11]. For CRAMs and CBTMs, the combined effect of bitumen and cement is very effective in terms of water sensitivity [7,8,[12][13][14] and high-temperature stability [12,13,15].…”

“…The bond between emulsion and aggregate in the cold recycling mixture was found to be significantly influenced by the coating property, and the bond was fundamental in terms of guaranteeing the durability of the cold recycling mixture [24]. The adhesion between asphalt binder and fine aggregate could be improved by adding cement, thus increasing the moisture stability of the mixture with 100% RAP [25]. The cement could hydrate with the water residue in the emulsified asphalt and increase the bonding between the mastic and aggregate.…”
