Effects of Cassava Juice (Manihot esculenta Crantz) on Renal and Hepatic Function and Motor Impairments in Male Rats

Abstract: Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a plant that contains neurotoxins such as linamarin and lotaustraline. Its long-term consumption is associated with neuronal damage and contributes to the development of motor impairment in humans and rats. We investigated the effects of the consumption of cassava juice on renal and hepatic function and motor impairments in male rats. The rats received the vehicle, non-toxic and toxic doses of cassava juice, or linamarin as a pharmacological control, over 35 consecutive da… Show more

“…Based on the present findings, the GIII group increased the levels of ALT, AST, and ALP, and the changes were more evident with an increase in the experimental period (0-20th dpc). In general, increases in serum concentration levels of ALT, AST, ALP, and TP are biological markers of hepatic damage [54]. The effect on the liver, a pivotal organ of metabolic homeostasis, is reflected in the levels of AST [55].…”

“…Second, a substantial proportion of patients lacked sufficient c-reactive protein (CRP) levels; thus, CRP/Alb ratios could not be calculated [24][25][26]. The total bilirubin level (TBIL) is a significant index of liver function [27][28][29][30], and thus, TBIL was monitored and high TBIL was promptly treated. Additionally, TBIL was an important independent prognosis predictor for ICC patients [31][32][33] and was significantly higher in the OH than LH group on the first postoperative blood tests (Table 3).…”
