Effects of Captan on the Germination of White Spruce, Jack and Red Pine Seed

Abstract: Treatment of tree seed with fungicides is an accepted technique in nursery practice to control losses due to damping-off; in field sowing, seeds are generally treated with bird and rodent repellents. However, in the province of Manitoba, Captan-SOW3 a fungicide with certain rodent repellent q~a l i t i e s ,~ has been applied to coniferous seed sown both in the field and in the nursery. Excellent germination has normally occurred in the nursery. However, results from field sowing have been variable and even in… Show more

“…Microorganisms infesting conifer seedcoats can be controlled by sterilization or by coating the seeds with fungicides. Many fungicides evaluated for forestry use are phytotoxie (Cayford andWaldron 1967, Vaartaja andWilner 1956), and sterilants inhibit germination of some species (Neal and others 1967), so both methods have been evaluated with southern pine seeds.…”

“…This can alter hormone production and Soil moisture appears to affect root growth, in an result in abnormal root growth. Net uptake of nutri-RRP (root regeneration potential) study, Day and ents per unit root area has also been shown to be MacGillivray (1975) recorded a significant reduction reduced in shaded white spruce (Morrison 1970).…”

“…Pelleting with baby energy had high germination capacity and fast powder actually improved germination (Waldron and juvenile growth. Cayford 1967), possibly due to better moisture absorption by the seed. Storage of seed does not Burgar (1964a) and Ackerman and Gorman (1969) appear to be affected by chemical seed coating found a positive correlation between seed weight and Waldron 1966, Radvanyi 1975).…”

“…Captan is registered for use on a wide variety of fruit trees but, as the label states, it should not be used on D'Anjeau pear. Captan has been reported to injure both leaves (13) and roots (8). Captan applied to the soil surface at concentrations as low as 0.2% reduced shoot and root growth of 5-week-old Picea sitchensis, Pinus sylvestris, and Tsuga heterophylla seedlings (22).…”
