Effects of Calcium Gluconate, a Water Soluble Calcium Salt on the Collagen-Induced DBA/1J Mice Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: This study examined the effects of calcium (Ca) gluconate on collagen-induced DBA mouse rheumatoid arthritis (CIA). A single daily dose of 200, 100 or 50 mg/kg Ca gluconate was administered orally to male DBA/1J mice for 40 days after initial collagen immunization. To ascertain the effects administering the collagen booster, CIA-related features (including body weight, poly-arthritis, knee and paw thickness, and paw weight increase) were measured from histopathological changes in the spleen, left popliteal lym… Show more

“…Previous studies have found that dietary calcium supplementation can prevent osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in vivo 32,33 . In addition, it has been found that calcium gluconate had favorable effects on Collagen‐induced arthritis (CIA) mice, which were mediated by its anti‐inflammatory, anti‐oxidative, and immunomodulatory properties 9 . Nevertheless, the effect of calcium on osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption was not mentioned.…”

“…In another study, calcium gluconate has been reported to produce pancreatitis in cats. 8 Current study was aimed at answering a few important questions and issues. If calcium is able to enhance effect of etoricoxib as it has been shown to enhance nonselective NSAID, aspirin, it might be possible to use calcium to enhance anti-inflammatory effect of etoricoxib.…”

“…Calcium salts have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity [15,16,17]. The anti-inflammatory activity of calcium gluconate has been shown to enhance that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [18], as well as to mitigate ligation-induced periodontitis and related alveolar bone loss [7] and collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis [19] via anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.…”
