Effects of Caffeine on Gastrointestinal Myoelectric Activity and Colonic Spike Activity in Dogs

Abstract: Caffeine increases spike activity in the colon, and its effect may be dose-dependent. Gastric and jejunal slow waves are not affected by caffeine.

“…The APs, thus, appear to be responsible for the rectal motile activity (Shafik, 1994(Shafik, , 1995Shafik et al, 1995;Kauer et al, 1999;Abo et al, 2000). The current and previous studies (Shafik, 1994(Shafik, , 1995Shafik et al, 1995;Kauer et al, 1999;Abo et al, 2000) have demonstrated that APs follow, or are superimposed on, the PPs. The function of the PPs is not exactly known (Kerremans, 1968;Julia et al, 1999;Kauer et al, 1999;Abo et al, 2000).…”

We suggest that the PPs initiate and pace the APs in terms of frequency and direction (Shafik, 1994(Shafik, , 1995Shafik et al, 1995).…”

“…Its effects on the colon are found to be comparable to those of a 1,000 kCal meal. Abo et al, 11 in 2000, showed that an intravenous injection of a caffeine solution, at doses of 125 and 250 mg, in conscious hound dogs resulted in an increase in the myoelectric spike activity of the ascending colon, in a dose-dependent pattern.…”

“…The mechanism of rectal motility is not yet fully elucidated (Schafer et al, 1996;Cortesini et al, 1995). Electric activity could be recorded from different parts of the gut including the stomach (Kauer et al, 1999;Levanon & Chen, 1998), small (Aube et al, 1999;Medeiros et al, 1997) and large gut (Abo et al, 2000;Julia et al, 1999) and liver (Shafik, 2000). It occurs in the form of slow waves or pacesetter potentials (PPs) and fast activity spikes or action potentials (APs).…”
