“…It has recently been reported that a factor which is important in drug effects on aggression in mice is the animal's baseline level of aggressiveness (Traversa et al 1985), Since we have routinely found that hamsters identified as highly or minimally aggressive on initial screening remain so on subsequent tests, our experimental situation lends itself to a test of the cross-species generality of this phenomenon too. A differential response to GABAergic agents would strenghten the hypothesis that differences in GABAergic mechanisms account for the differences between highly and minimally aggressive animals; it would also suggest that a common mechanism underlying both the baseline differences and the differential drug sensitivity could be sought.…”
