Effects of Bergenin, the Major Constituent of Mallotus japonicus against D-Galactosamine-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Abstract: The hepatoprotective effects of bergenin, a major constituent of Mallotus japonicus, were evaluated against D-galactosamine (GalN)-induced liver damage in rats. Bergenin (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) was given orally once daily for 7 successive days and then GalN 400 mg/kg was injected intraperitoneally to rats at 24 and 96 h after the final administration of bergenin. Pretreatment with bergenin reduced the increased enzyme activities of alanine/aspartate aminotransferase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, γ-glutamyltransfera… Show more

“…Bergenin has been widely used for the treatment of chronic bronchitis and has other effects such as antitussive, hepatoprotective, anti-infl ammatory, neuroprotective and weak anti-HIV activities [3][4][5][6] . Although bergenin has been used for more than 30 years, its poor oral bioavailability is still an obstacle to its further application [7] .…”

“…These five compounds have been shown to have significant pharmacological activities. Bergenin is reported to have hepatoprotective [40], and immunomodulatory [41] activity. (+)-Catechin has been shown to have antioxidant [42], glucosidase-II [43] and matrix metalloproteinase inhibitory activity [44] and renoprotective effect [45].…”

“…The most notable biological activity of arbutin is potent inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme that attribuites to its use as a commercial skin lightning agent [74][75][76]. On the other hand, bergenin has numerous biological effects, including antiviral [77], antiulcer [78], antiarethmetic [79], antidiabetic and anti-obesity [80], anti-inflammatory [81], immunomodulatory [82] and hepatoprotective [83][84][85] effects.…”
