Effects of balanced deep‐sea water on adipocyte hypertrophy and liver steatosis in high‐fat, diet‐induced obese mice

Abstract: Objective: To determine the effects of balanced deep-sea water (BDSW) on adipocyte hypertrophy and liver steatosis in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese C57BL/6J mice. Methods: BDSW was prepared by mixing deep-sea water (DSW) mineral extracts and desalinated water. C57BL/6J mice were fed a normal diet or HFD with or without BDSW with different hardness (500, 1000, or 2000) for 20 weeks. Results: BDSW suppressed body weight gain in HFD-fed mice. Histopathologic assays of the fat and liver revealed that BDSW inhi… Show more

“…DOW not only demonstrated hypolipidemic effects but also improved the health functions of fatty livers. Another study indicated that DOW suppresses lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis in the liver, increases β-oxidation-related gene expression, and improves the phosphorylation of IRS-1, LKB1, AMPK, and mTOR in fat and liver tissues (Ha et al 2014). …”

“…Numerous studies have confirmed that DSW has pharmacological effects, including protecting the cardiovascular system (12,13), improving metabolic processes (14,15), anti-osteoporosis properties (16), treating atopic dermatitis skin lesions (17), accelerating recovery from physical fatigue (18), providing intestinal protection against duodenal ulcers (9) and inhibiting the metastatic potential of human breast cancer cell lines (19 Although DSW has already been studied for its alleviating fatigue effect in Wistar rats, the beneficial effects isolated in that study were only attributed to the minerals of DSW (20). In addition, the mechanism behind the beneficial effect has not yet been fully clarified.…”

“…From each sample, total RNA (10 µg) was reverse transcribed into cDNA using the Moloney murine leukemia virus transcriptase and Oligo(dT) 15 Statistical analysis. All data are expressed as the mean ± standard error of the mean and differences between the groups were analyzed using a Student's t-test.…”

“…Deep sea water (DSW) generally refers to sea water from a depth of >200 m (11). DSW has been the subject of many studies due to its high content of inorganic nutrients such as magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), zinc (Zn) and vanadium (V), and has been indicated to be associated with prevention of obesity (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), which is an annual herbaceous plant, has long been an ingredient in human foods (16).…”
