Effects of “Bacuri” Seed Butter (Platonia insignis Mart.) on Metabolic Parameters in Hamsters with Diet-Induced Hypercholesterolemia

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the treatment with bacuri seed butter (BB) on body weight, growth, body mass index, lipid profile, atherosclerotic indices, and liver function in dyslipidemic hamsters. Freshly weaned, male hamsters were divided into four groups: (1) normal group (NG)—maintained with standard chow (AIN-93G); (2) dyslipidemia group (DG)—maintained with hyperlipidemic chow (AIN-93G modified) throughout the follow-up period; (3) bacuri seed butter 25 mg/kg/day (BB-25); and (4) bacuri se… Show more

“…Devido à presença desses compostos fitoquímicos, a polpa de açaí apresenta alta capacidade antioxidante, principalmente, pela presença de luteolina, quercetina e diidrocaempferol, que podem contribuir com a redução do estresse oxidativo causado dentro das células (24) . Em ensaios in vitro, o óleo da polpa de açaí mostra efeito inibitório no crescimento de bactérias gram-positivas (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis) (32,36) .…”

“…Furthermore, studies have shown that bacuri seed oil possesses an important healing activity and it can be used in the treatment of burns and wounds [34,38]. Moreover, recently, in vivo studies point to an important potential antioxidant and cardioprotective action [39,40].…”

“…Compounds extracted from the shell, seeds, flowers, and stem bark have shown that parts of the plant can be used as an alternative in the treatment of various diseases. Its potential as cardioprotective [39,47], vasorelaxant [48], leishmanicidal [49], immunomodulatory [38], and for glycemic control [50], among others, has been reported in a variety of studies (Table 7). These effects are associated with the presence of compounds derived from terpenes, xanthones, and phenolics, in addition to saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, as can be seen in Figure 3.…”

“…Previous studies have investigated the effect of food derived-by products from grapes [ 37 , 44 ], beetroot [ 43 ], apricot [ 41 , 42 ], jaboticaba [ 15 , 23 ], onion [ 25 ], cranberry [ 24 ], pear [ 16 ], olive [ 26 ], peach [ 17 ], blueberry [ 31 ], and bacuri [ 33 ] on serum lipids. Araújo et al [ 23 ] investigated the effect of jaboticaba peel flour supplementation in rats fed with a hyperlipidemic diet for 4 weeks.…”
