(Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Plant Protect. Sci., 50: 184-189.Laboratory studies were performed to determine the insecticidal activity of baculovirus against diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. The nucleopolyhedrosis (HaNPV) was tested against 2 nd instar larvae fed on cabbage leaf disks treated with aqueous suspensions of occlusion bodies (OB). Lethal concentrations values (LC 25 , LC 50 , and LC 75 ) were 2.2 × 10 3 , 3.8 × 10 4 , and 6.6 × 10 5 PIB/ml for 2 nd larval instars, respectively. Median lethal time (LT 50 ) to similar response levels (mortality rates 50-75%) decreased with decreasing larval age (from 114.23 to 106.05 h). Larval development time and pupal weight were not affected by different concentrations (LC 25 , LC 50 , and LC 75 ) of HaNPV. Significant differences were found in the pupal rate and adult emergence in larvae treated by different concentrations. In conclusion, HaNPV treatment failed to cause high mortality rates in P. xylostella larvae, but it had prompt deleterious effects on survivor's development and emergence.

A number of entomopathogenic microbial agents infect a wide array of insects and cause epizootics from time to time. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and Nuclearpolyhedrosis virus (NPV) are two important potential pathogens of Helicoverpa armigera. Investigations were carried out on integration of B. thuringiensis and Nuclearpolyhedrosis virus to determine its impact on survival of second and fourth instar larvae under laboratory conditions. Both Bt and NPV were applied using diet incorporation method. Larvae continued to feed for 48 h when a batch of fifteen insects was exposed to diet mixed with any of the treatment. Mortality was recorded every 48 h until larvae died or pupated. The susceptibility of H. armigera larvae decreased with older stage as greater mortality was recorded in second instar larvae (95.45%) in comparison to fourth instar larvae (82.48%) in combined application of Bt and NPV. Application rate of Bt was the key for type of interaction as only one synergistic interaction (CTF≥20) was recorded when lower dose of Bt was combined with NPV, rest of the combinations were additive and independent (CTF≤20). Reduction in the pupation, adult emergence and egg eclosion was found directly related to pathogenicity of the applied agents. This study would be helpful to extend the integrated use of pathogens under field condition to many important insect pests.

The development of resistance in cosmopolitan insect Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) forced the researchers for alternative control measures. In the present study, insecticidal efficacy of formulations of Azadirachta indica, a Nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV), and new anthranilic diamide insecticide (chlorantraniliprole) formulations was determined against 2 nd , through 5 th larval instars of H. armigera collected from diverse geographical locations in the Punjab province, Pakistan. Azadirachta indica was applied at 5 µL L -1 ; NPV at 2.1 × 10 5 polyhedral occlusion bodies (POB) mL -1 and chlorantraniliprole at 0.01 µL L -1 , either alone or in combinations with each other. The bioassays were conducted at 27 ± 1 °C and 65 ± 5% relative humidity. The mortality varied greatly among treatments, larval instars, and locations. The combinations of NPV with A. indica and chlorantraniliprole caused higher mortality, pupation and produced an additive effect compared to their application singly in all the tested populations. The population from Rawalpindi was always susceptible while the Gujranwala was the resistant. The results herein suggest that the effectiveness of NPV and A. indica can be improved by the presence of chlorantraniliprole against the larvae of H. armigera.
