Effects of Artificial Light Spectra and Sucrose on the Leaf Pigments, Growth, and Rooting of Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) Microshoots

Abstract: Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are potential light sources for in vitro plant cultures. Here, axillary blackberry shoots were grown in MS medium with indole-3-butyric acid (1 mg L−1), naphthalene acetic acid (0.5 mg L−1), and sucrose supplementation (0–60 g L−1) and the cultures were incubated under four light treatments: three LED light treatments (blue + red light (2:1 spectral ratio), blue + red light (1:2), and cool + warm white light (1:1)) and a standard florescent tube white spectrum treatment. Sucrose wa… Show more

“…Al-Taif rose axillary shoots were cultured for six weeks on half strength MS medium containing 0.2 mg/L NAA and either 60 or 80 g/L sucrose. Next, four different light treatments were applied as per the protocol specified by Dewir et al [21]. Briefly, three LED light (Shenzhen Lumini Technology Co., Ltd., Shenzhen, China) treatments were tested alongside a standard fluorescent tube white spectrum.…”

“…With the increasing demand for crop yield, the traditional methods of enhancing crop yields through chemical fertilizers and pesticides are no longer compatible due to their polluting nature. The technology of promoting plant growth and development by artificially increasing the content of beneficial light has been developed rapidly and has become one of the hot research fields in facility agriculture [19]. This can be roughly divided into plant-growth LEDs and light-conversion plastic films.…”

“…The cultivation of berries is the subject of wide-ranging studies due to the fact that they have very tasty fruits and that they are recommended to be consumed at increasing rates in the daily diet [1,2]. Rubus fructorious, in the genus Rubus, is widely grown in temperate climatic regions of the world due to increasing consumer demand [3,4] and is one of the most popular horticultural berry fruit species. Blackberries are used in many sectors such as food, cosmetics, and health, and can be consumed fresh and processed.…”

“…Blackberries are also described as functional food in connection with their organoleptic properties and high content of polyphenol compounds [2,4,6]. Compared to many other fruit species, blackberry has advantages such as ease of cultivation and marketing, providing raw materials to the industry, being suitable for family business, high income from small areas, and low production costs [1][2][3]6]. Boysenberry is described as hybrid Rubus berry of Rubus baileyanus and Rubus loganobaccus [7].…”
