Effects of apple and orange juices on quality of refrigerated goat semen

Abstract: This study investigated the effects of apple and orange juices on quality of refrigerated spermatozoa of goat bucks. Semen samples from WAD goat bucks were diluted with Tris-egg yolk extenders each supplemented with apple and orange juices at 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10/100 ml of diluents. The diluted semen samples were assessed for sperm viability and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration after in vitro storage for 240 hours at 5 o C. The ability to maintain sperm motility was higher in the extenders with 7.5% orange… Show more

“…The higher performance of watermelon fortified semen can be attributed to the phytoconstituents of watermelon chiefly, antioxidants such as vitamin C, lycopene and beta carotene. Consequently, study have stated that the addition of vitamin C to an extender could possibly improve sperm function by reducing cell damage through its continuous radical-scavenging action [ 18 ]. For instance, alpha-tocopherol which is one of the main antioxidants, was found to be abundant in spermatozoa membrane that protects sperm from oxidative damage [ 19 ].…”

“…[6] and Reza et al [15] that stated addition of vitamin C and vitamin E which are antioxidants in preserved semen can improve sperm motility. Adekunle et al [1] also reported 10% of apple juice gave the highest motility rate in cooled goat semen at 216 hours of storage time. Moreover, motility rate in extender supplemented with 7.5% of apple juice was significantly higher than the control group (no supplementation added).…”

“…Even though research on semen preservation is quite common, research on the best commercial extender supplementation derived from natural resource is still lacking [5]. At present, natural extracts from fruits such as orange juice and apple juice [1] as well as date palm pollen grain [9] had proven to improve semen quality in preservation due to their antioxidant properties. Date palm pollen (DPP) is found to improve fertility of both men and women in IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1755-1315/1102/1/012050 2 ancient times [16].…”

“…In contrast, the addition of a freezing solution, called cryoprotectant, to the semen is used for extending the semen dilutions, which protect from cytotoxicity and osmotic stress during cryopreservation [134]. Several studies have been undertaken to use different materials and compounds, such as plant origins [135][136][137][138], whole milk, fish oil, and honey, to promote the quality of the extenders [139][140][141]. Historically, mammalian tissue fertility is enhanced by using honey in many cultures.…”
