Effects of anxiety and depression symptoms on oxidative stress in patients with alopecia areata

Abstract: Introduction: Increased oxidative stress (OXS) and a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders are seen in alopecia areata (AA). However, OXS and psychiatric disorders have been studied separately in AA patients. Aim: To determine the effects of anxiety and depression symptoms on OXS in AA patients. Material and methods: The anxiety and depression levels of 33 AA patients and 33 normal controls (NC) were determined using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated … Show more

“…There are many antioxidant and oxidant molecules that reflect the oxidative stress state in the organism, but measuring their levels separately is both difficult and costly. Therefore, practically total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) are measured [ 15 , 16 ] and the oxidative stress index (OSI), which reflects the degree of oxidative stress, is calculated by proportioning TOS to TAS [ 17 ].…”

“…A queda de cabelo, principalmente no couro cabeludo, afeta negativamente a aparência estética e a autoestima dos indivíduos. Portanto, os pacientes que sofrem de alopecia areata (AA), uma doença cutânea autoimune, podem estar sujeitos a várias doenças psiquiátricas e a maiores riscos de desenvolver transtorno depressivo maior (TDM) (Cakirca, G., et al, 2020).…”
