Effects of Anomalous Rotor Joints on Turbomachine Dynamics

Abstract: Mechanisms simulating rotor joint restoring moments different from the common axisymmetric elastic hinge are derived and their effects on the dynamics of a complete turbomachine are calculated by impressing equivalent perturbing moments. A mechanism for locking subsynchronous whirl to a fractional frequency is described and supporting experimental observations are discussed. Sample analysis shows the possibility of self-sustained synchronous whirl due to preload asymmetry.

“…Despite the strict control of preloads, the joint components may experience relative displacements at joint interfaces under severe loading conditions, such as large imbalance forces due to loss of a fan blade. 1,2 The relative displacements of joint components might cause local nonlinearity and result in complex dynamic behavior of rotor systems.…”
