Effects of Ankaferd Hemostat on Helicobacter pylori strains and antibiotic resistance

Abstract: Introduction Ankaferd hemostat (ABS; Ankaferd blood stopper, İstanbul, Turkey) is a folkloric medicinal plant extract. ABS has been conventionally used in Anatolia as a hemostatic agent for centuries (1). ABS contains a standardized combination of the plants Glycyrrhiza glabra, Thymus vulgaris, Alpinia officinarum, Vitis vinifera, and Urtica dioica. All of these plants have effects on the endothelium, the cellular components of blood, the development of new blood vessels, cell proliferation, and cell mediators… Show more

“…The efficiency of ABS on H. pylori was also demonstrated. Possible anti-H. pylori effect of ABS will broaden the therapeutic spectrum of the drug in GI lesions as peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomagenesis [73]. In vitro activity of ABS against M. Tuberculosis isolates was evaluated.…”

“…ABS is approved as a topically applied hemostatic agent for the management of post-surgical/dental bleedings and healing of the infected inflammatory mucosal wounds [7] , [8] . Although initally presented as a hemostatic agent, compelling body of evidence suggest that ABS has anti-inflammatory, anti-infective and anti-oxidative properties in distinct disease states [9] , [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] , [14] . Moreover, Urtica dioica which is the major component of ABS possesses broad-spectrum antiviral properties including SARS-CoV strains [15] .…”

“…Moreover, Urtica dioica which is the major component of ABS possesses broad-spectrum antiviral properties including SARS-CoV strains [15] . There are preliminary evidence that ABS has in vitro anti-viral actions on the Bovine Herpes virus type 1 (BHV-1) [13] as well as other established anti-infective properties in a wide variety of pathogens [11] , [12] , [13] , [16] , [17] . Most importantly, topical ABS applications for severe oral mucositis in patients with pediatric and adult cancer receiving chemotherapy/ radiotherapy [18] , [19] and mucosal healing of the pulmonary tissue in lung-bleeding patients [14] demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the drug for mucosal disease control in clinical backgrounds.…”

“…ABS has been approved for the management of external hemorrhage and dental surgery by the Ministry of Health in Turkey [9]. ABS is a promising hemostatic and possesses regenerative, antineoplastic, and antimicrobial properties against multidrug resistant bacteria [10][11][12]. ABS is a hemostatic agent used to control postoperative bleeding in patients with various bleeding disorders [13,14].…”
