Effects of Ananas comosus leaf powder on broiler performance, haematology, biochemistry, and gut microbial population

Abstract: -The objective of our study was to evaluate the effects of pineapple (Ananas comosus) leaf powder (PLP) on broiler performance. One hundred male broiler chicks (aged one day) were divided into five groups consisting of four pens as replicates, which were treated with basal diet (normal control); basal diet supplemented with 1, 2, and 3% PLP; or 50 mg/kg of zinc bacitracin (ZnB) as a positive control for 35 days. Body weights were significantly increased by 1.06, 5.67, 13.15, and 11.92%, respectively, and feed … Show more

“…Furthermore, phytobiotics significantly increased the Lactobacillus count compared to PC and NC groups. Several studies endorsed the current study findings of supplemented groups Po8 and Pb4, where supplementation of the phytobiotics leaf meal in broilers' diet possessing secondary metabolites polyphenols such as flavonoid and phenolic compound can positively modulate the microbiota balance [22,87,88].…”

“…Numerous studies suggested that PFAs might be the potent and viable natural alternative to AGPs for poultry production [ 7 , 9 , 12 , 13 ]. Dietary supplementation of phytobiotics in broilers has considerable positive effects; their supplementation could improve gut health [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], positively modulate the dynamics of gut microbiota [ 17 ], and enhance feed efficiency [ 6 , 18 ], thus, increase growth performance [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Various studies have established the antibacterial efficacy of phytobiotics against pathogenic bacteria, such as Clostridium and E. coli , in broiler chickens [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…Furthermore, Deka, Sahu and Jain [51] found that the specific growth rates and protein efficiency ratios of Labeo rohita increased significantly in diets containing 25% pineapple waste. In the same context, Rahman and Yang [52] found that growth performance, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio increased significantly in chicken fed diets supplemented with leaf powder (PLP). The authors explained that the bioactive compounds present in PLP modified the gut microbiome, leading to enhanced nutrient digestion and assimilation.…”

“…It is interesting to mention that apart from fishes, a significant increase in growth performance was also noticed in chickens [31].…”

“…The PPE contains high amounts of phenolic compounds, like gallic acid and ferulic acid, which can improve the growth performances in fish and other organisms [31][32][33]. Bromelain present in the PPE significantly boosts the enzymatic activity of pepsin and enhances nutrient digestion and absorption by influencing the gut tissue and intestinal absorptive cells [34,35] and the acceptable flavor and palatability of pineapple.…”
