Effects of an Intervention Promoting Proactive Coping Competencies in Middle and Late Adulthood

Abstract: Conceptualizing proactive coping as a set of competencies allows the translation of this approach into interventions. Competencies that facilitate future-oriented self-regulation can be improved by a brief educational program in middle and late adulthood.

“…Also the study of Jopp and Smith (2006)-although their focus was on the protective role of SOC strategies in resource-poor old people-indicated that SOC had positive associations with resources, and an independent effect on well-being in the young-old. Bode et al (2007) investigated aspects of proactive coping in middle and late adulthood, but this study did not specifically address the question whether proactive coping is actually associated with fewer resource losses and with well-being indicators.…”

“…Aspinwall and Taylor's (1997) negatively focused definition of proactive coping through prevention of negative outcomes was not significantly related to well-being. Additionally, the Proactive Competence Scale (PCS), a 21-item instrument, developed among older adults 50 and 75 years of age, designed to measure the five steps of Aspinwall and Taylor's (1997) proactive coping process (Bode, de Ridder, Kuijer, & Bensing, 2007) was used to identify specific coping and self-regulatory strategies used in proactive coping. Aspinwall and Taylor's conceptualization of proactive coping and the Proactive Competence Scale (PCS) best explained specific self-regulation processes and quantified proactive coping competencies.…”
