Effects of an Inhaled β2‐Agonist on Cardiovascular Function and Sympathetic Activity in Healthy Subjects

Abstract: In these healthy subjects, administration of a nebulized β(2)-agonist resulted in enhanced ventricular function and a decrease in SVR, suggesting peripheral vasodilation. In addition, the increase in norepinephrine level with albuterol, but not placebo, may have important implications in patients with known cardiovascular disease.

“…Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was similar after placebo and salbutamol administration. This was also found in studies by Edgell, Moore, Chung, Byers, Stickland 15 Cekici, Valipour, Kohansal, Burghuber 25 , Jartti, Kaila, Tahvanainen, Kuusela, Vanto, Valimaki 27 , Antonelli et al 29 , and Snyder, Wong, Foxx-Lupo, Wheatley, Cassuto, Patanwala 15,25,27,29,33 . Blood pressure and perception of effort during exercise and recovery did not change significantly between interventions that are similar to the results observed by Freeman el al 28 .…”

“…An ICS/LABA inhalation overdose may be one of the triggers. There have been some reports regarding the effects of inhaled beta2 agonists on cardiovascular function (29) and stress cardiomyopathy precipitated by the intravenous administration of catecholamines and beta-receptor agonists (5). Moreover, Shao et al used a rat model to support the hypothesis of circulating catecholamines as initiators of stress-induced cardiomyopathy and the importance of beta-adrenoreceptors (30).…”

“…The sympathomimetic effects include both a systemic response (e.g., increased in heart rate, tremor, decreased systemic vascular resistance, and decreased plasma potassium levels) (3;4) and pulmonary changes (i.e., bronchodilation and increased lung function). (5;6) The effect of inhaled beta-agonist medicine on healthy individuals is also evinced by their banned use (with the exception of limited amounts of albuterol and formoterol) in competitive sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee (http://www.wada-ama.org/).…”
