“…Changes in behavior include healthier goal‐directed choices and self‐advocacy (Falk‐Rafael). In the previous literature, the model of empowered caring has been used to improve the adaptation of elderly residents of nursing homes (Chang & Park, ). Moreover, it has been reported that the nursing interventions based on Orem's self‐care theory, which promote support, the use of educational strategies for knowledge and skills, and the improvement of participation in treatment, can promote self‐care by hemodialysis patients (Simmons, ).…”

“…In addition, given the significantly low NHAS scores of residents who had stayed under 12 months compared with the those who had stayed longer, more nursing interventions or structured adjustment programmes are needed particularly for the residents who stay under 12 months. In a rare example of such a nursing home adjustment intervention, an empowerment programme in one study was effective to improve the adjustment levels of older adults whose period of stay was under 1 year . These study findings provide insights into how nursing staff could develop different intervention modalities for different groups of residents depending on the length of stay in a nursing home.…”

“…In all of the subcategories of health promoting behaviors, including the physical, social, and emotional dimensions, the level of health promoting behaviors was higher in the group-home group than in the at-home group. Considering that personal health is an important factor affecting friendship relationships (Chang & Park, 2012; Schulz, Boerner, Klinger, & Rosen, 2015; Shearer, Fleury, Ward, & O’Brien, 2012), older adults who live at home in rural areas of South Korea are more limited and disadvantaged than their peers who live in group homes in terms of the frequency and degree of interpersonal interactions (Ko, 2016; Sok & Kim, 2008). Therefore, older adults living in group homes are in a much better position to develop a base of support through interactions with fellow residents and to improve self-esteem and improve their health promoting behaviors through information sharing.…”
