Introdução: Paralisia cerebral (PC) é o termo utilizado para descrever um conjunto de desordens motoras e sensoriais decorrentes de distúrbios não progressivos no encéfalo. As lesões podem acontecer antes, durante ou após o nascimento, levando a um controle motor deficiente, desordem neuromuscular e inatividade. O tratamento fisioterapêutico deve ser iniciado precocemente para estimular o desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor da criança com PC. Sendo assim, a hidroterapia é uma abordagem terapêutica que está sendo muito utilizada entre os fisioterapeutas na busca da recuperação e melhora destes pacientes. Objetivo e métodos: Realizar uma revisão das publicações indexadas nas bases de dados SciELO, Pubmed e LILACS, nos idiomas português, espanhol e inglês entre 1996 e 2012. Resultados: Foram obtidos 60 estudos. Destes, 11 artigos foram excluídos por tratarem de temas que não estão diretamente relacionados à pesquisa. Conclusão: A hidroterapia é uma estratégia terapêutica de grande valia para pacientes com PC, devido a sua eficácia na melhora da flexibilidade, da postura, da amplitude de movimento, da força muscular e da funcionalidade. A combinação destes benefícios se reflete na qualidade de vida destes pacientes.

The objective of the current study was to quantify and summarize the various aquatic interventions in children with disabilities, including studies of all levels of evidence. Forty-five intervention studies were included and were described within nine disability groups. The largest number of articles was found in the groups of "diseases and disabilities of the nervous system" (N = 15) and "mental and behavioral disorders" (N = 15). Swimming or aquatic interventions in children with sensory system and integration deficits, circulatory system problems, congenital malformations, and chromosomal abnormalities did not reveal any published literature. The categorization of aquatic interventions was difficult due to several concerns: the lack of common definitions, the absence of intervention details, individualized therapy or training plans without a decision-making model, different types of pools (temperature and depth), and an undefined mix of several intervention types. Training intensity was missing in 68% of the interventions.
