Effects of Amorphous Calcium Phosphate Administration on Dental Sensitivity during In-Office and At-Home Interventions

Abstract: Background. Tooth bleaching is the most frequently employed whitening procedure in clinics. The major side effect of tooth bleaching is dental sensitivity during and after the treatment. Here, we evaluated whether the administration of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), during in-office and at-home procedures may impact on dental sensitivity. Methods. Eighty patients, responding to the study requirements were enrolled according to the following criteria. Group 1 (n = 40), received in-office, 10% ACP prior to 3… Show more

“…All selected studies were randomized clinical trials. Eleven studies [ 9 - 15 , 17 , 18 , 20 ] were performed using a parallel study design, whereas the other three [ 16 , 19 , 20 ] were performed as a split-mouth study. In addition, two studies [ 15 , 16 ] were single masked, three studies [ 18 , 20 , 21 ] were triple masked, whereas six studies [ 9 , 10 , 12 - 14 , 19 ] were double-masked.…”

“…The in-office bleaching procedure and concentration varied between the included studies. One study [ 11 ] used 28% of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration of bleaching agent, two studies [ 13 , 17 ] used 30% concentration, nine studies [ 9 , 10 , 12 , 14 , 16 , 18 , 20 , 21 ] used 35% and two studies [ 15 ] used 40% H2O2 concentration of bleaching agent.…”

“…In orthodontic therapy, the risk of dental erosion is significantly increased. We are, therefore, recommended remineralizing toothpaste based on biomimetic nanohydroxyapatite (Biorepair Plus Total Protection or, in case of high sensitivity, Biorepair Plus Sensitive Teeth) or topical remineralizing products based on microrepair (Biorepair Desensitizing Repair-Enamel Shock Treatment) [ 12 , 15 ].…”

“…Another practical home-based intervention uses the so-called “whitestrips”, adhesive strips based on whitening agents that must be adhered to the teeth for 30 min, twice a day, for 14 days. Economical, practical and with a low risk of dentine hypersensitivity, this treatment has, however, a low efficacy, requires quite long times, and the results are guaranteed only for a few months [28].…”
