The effects of the intensification on the performance of the Amazon River prawn hatchery carried out in a simple recirculation system were investigated. Newly hatched larvae were stocked in 120 L tanks at 80, 100, 120 and 140 larvae L−1 in a closed recirculating system. The experiment used a randomized block design with five replicates. An exponential equation was adjusted to express the relationship between the stocking density and productivity (postlarvae L−1). The development, larval quality, survival and postlarval (PL) dry weight did not significantly differ among the treatments (p > 0.05). When 80 larvae were stocked, the productivity (54 ± 11 PL L−1) was lower than those at higher densities (p < 0.05). Stocking 120 and 140 larvae L−1 resulted in higher productivities (75 ± 18 and 80 ± 17 PL L−1, respectively) with a lower use of Artemia nauplii to produce each postlarvae (~1200 Artemia nauplii PL−1). The maximum mean M. amazonicum postlarval production estimated by the exponential model was 93 PL L−1. This means that despite the increase in stocking density, productivity tends to stabilize. The results showed that M. amazonicum tolerates high intensification in recirculating hatchery systems based on a crushed shell bed biofilter, and the intensification optimizes Artemia use.

The time supply of live food (Artemia nauplii) at the initial phases of development and the frequency of feeding with inert feed (egg custard) in Macrobrachium amazonicum larviculture were evaluated by two experiments: In Experiment I, newly hatched Artemia were offered to the larvae in three schedules (treatments): at 07:30 h (A07:30); at 12:00 h (A12:00) and 16:30 h (A16:30). In Experiment II, the inert food was offered in the following frequencies (treatments): twice a day - at 08:00 and 17:00 h (IF2); three times a day - at 08:00; 12:30 and 17:00 h (IF3) and four times a day - at 08:00; 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00 h (IF4). Water quality variables (dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity, NH3 + NH4, NO2 and NO3) and production variables (weight, survival and duration of larviculture) were evaluated. The feeding managements studied did not influence significantly either the water quality and production variables. The results indicated that it can be recommended, for M. amazonicum larviculture feeding management, the supply of Artemia nauplii at early morning and inert feed two times per day (early morning and late afternoon), after stage V until the metamorphosis.

ABSTRACT. In the aquaculture of prawns in inland facilities, the supply with natural seawater is technically difficult and expensive, while the use of artificial salt may be suboptimal due to unfavorable ionic composition. In the present study, Amazon River prawn, Macrobrachium amazonicum, were reared from hatching through nine larval stages to the first juvenile instar, comparing four experimental conditions with two salinities (5, 10) and two different types of salt (artificial, natural). Larval biomass growth was measured in terms of changes in dry weight (W), contents of carbon and nitrogen (C, N), and proximate biochemical composition (lipid, protein); moreover, body size (carapace length, CL) was measured in first-stage juveniles. After passing through the nonfeeding first larval stage, later stages showed an exponential increase in values of biomass per individual. Rates of increase differed significantly among treatments, showing generally lower growth in experiments with artificial vs. natural salt, and at 5 vs. 10. The same response pattern was found also in CL of early juvenile shrimps. Similar but mostly weaker effects were observed in the percentage C, N, lipid, and protein values (in % of W), and in the C: N mass ratio. Our data indicate that larval rearing of M. amazonicum is feasible with artificial salts and at lower than commonly used standard salinity (10). This makes the cultivation of this species feasible also in aquaculture facilities located at large distance from the coast, where a reduction of costs and logistic investments may compensate for reduced larval growth and production of smaller juveniles. However, these salinity effects on offspring production have to be taken into account in comparisons of growth data from different laboratories and locations.
