Effects of air pollution on human health and practical measures for prevention in Iran

Abstract: Air pollution is a major concern of new civilized world, which has a serious toxicological impact on human health and the environment. It has a number of different emission sources, but motor vehicles and industrial processes contribute the major part of air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, six major air pollutants include particle pollution, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and lead. Long and short term exposure to air suspended toxicants has a differe… Show more

“…These concerns have been in part attributed to environmental stressors [39] resulting from inadequate environmental regulation and policy [120]. In particular, air pollution is of extreme concern in Global South cities [121], and studies found that it is linked to cardiovascular and respiratory-related mortality [122], poor maternal outcomes [123], cancer rates and immune system dysfunctions [124]. Increasing the proximity and quantity of green spaces, particularly in low-SES neighborhoods where current green space provision is low, can mitigate these effects by filtering polluted air and improve residents' health [125].…”

“…Environmental factors, primarily, air pollution, are commonly recognized as the sources of the most serious toxicological impacts on human health, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, neuropsychiatric complications, and cancer [116,117]. In the Russian Arctic, previous studies identified such emissions as sulfate aerosols from metal smelting [118] and flaring associated with oil and gas extraction [119] but found no evidence of direct health implications from air pollutant emissions [2,120].…”

“…Air pollution is a major environmental risk factor for morbidity in Iran including diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, ventricular hypertrophy, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, autism, and retinopathy (Ghorani-Azam et al 2016). Higher air pollution days resulted in more hospital admissions in Tehran (Khalilzadeh et al 2009), and high PM 2.5 days lead to increased admissions to the emergency department, particularly for respiratory problems in Tehran (Shadi et al 2014).…”
