“…We measured the length and breadth of flooded eggs to the nearest 0.01 mm using digital calliper, and calculated egg volume (V e ) and Shape Index (SI) following Coulson (1963): V e = K × L × B² and SI = (B/L) × 100, where K = 0.482 (Calvo 1994;Hanane et al 2010), L is egg length and B is egg breadth.…”

“…Lysenko (1980) found 50% nest loss and 30% chick loss caused by livestock trampling for breeding colonies in Ukraine. For the Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola , Calvo (1994) found high hatching rates in marshland colonies (88% of clutches hatched), but lower rates on farmland (29% hatched). Belik and Lebedeva (2004) and Belik (2004) suggest both nest failure and chick mortality to reach 60–100% in Black-winged Pratincole annually, but this is based on a study of ‘colonial waders’ in Central Kazakhstan and does not necessarily concern Black-winged Pratincole (Elkin 1981).…”

“…The majority of the colonies in agricultural areas were located in sunflower and cotton fields and occasionally in sorghum and chickpea cultivations (Calvo & Alberto 1990). However, breeding success was substantially lower as compared to in fields than in grasslands close to seminatural marshlands (Calvo 1994).…”
