Biocides are frequently used to control sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in biofouling. The increasing restrictions of environmental regulations and growing safety concerns on the use of biocides result in efforts to minimize the amount of biocide use and develop environmentally friendly biocides. In this study, the antimicrobial activity and corrosion inhibition effect of a low-toxic alternative biocide, benzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride (BDMDAC), on a 304 stainless steel substrate immersed in a Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (D. desulfuricans)-inoculated medium was examined. Potentiodynamic polarization curves were used to analyze corrosion behavior. Biofilm formation and corrosion products on the surfaces of 304 stainless steel coupons were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Results demonstrated that this compound exhibited satisfactory results against microbial corrosion by D. desulfuricans. The corrosion current density and current densities in the anodic region were lower in the presence of BDMDAC in the D. desulfuricans-inoculated medium. SEM and CLSM analyses revealed that the presence of BDMDAC mitigated formation of biofilm by D. desulfuricans.

The aim of this study was to investigate the morphology, structure and resistance of the biofilm including mixed bacterial population formed on the galvanized steel surfaces in a model water circulation system by electrochemical methods and to determine the effect of biofilm formation on the corrosion behavior of galvanized steel. The model water circulation system simulating a real cooling tower was run by maintaining uninterrupted supply of water for 3 months. The resistance of biofilm formed on the surface of the galvanized steels, which were removed from the model water circulation system montly, was determined by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Polarization curves for each coupons were drawn. The biofilm formation and corrosion products were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result, it was determined that the structure and resistance of biofilm formed on the galvanized steel surfaces was different in each exposure time and thus the corrosion behavior of galvanized steel surfaces was changed according to time.

Sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) can be found in alkaline environments. Due to their metabolite products such as hydrogen sulphide, the corrosion behaviour of materials in alkaline environments may be affected by the presence of SRB. This study focuses on the investigation of corrosion behaviour of duplex stainless steel DSS 2205 in nutrient rich artificial seawater containing SRB species, Desulfovibrio vulgaris, at different alkaline conditions with pH range from 7 to 10. The open circuit potential value (OCP), sulphide level and pH were recorded daily. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to study the adhesion of SRB on the DSS 2205 surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to study the properties of the biofilm. Potentiodynamic polarization was used to study the corrosion behaviour of material. Inductively coupled plasma mass was used to measure the concentration of cations Fe, Ni, Mo, Mn in the experimental solution after 28 days. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used for surface analysis. The results showed that D. vulgaris are active in an alkaline environment with pH 7–9. However, at pH 10, D. vulgaris activity exhibited an 8-day lag. The corrosion rate of DSS 2205 at pH 9 was higher than at other pH environments due to a higher dissolved concentration of hydrogen sulphide.
