Effects of adjuvant low‐dye Kinesio taping, adjuvant sham taping, or extracorporeal shockwave therapy alone in plantar fasciitis: A randomised double‐blind controlled trial

Abstract: One of the common musculoskeletal pathology and pain causes of the foot is plantar heel pain, 1 and the most common cause of heel pain in adult ages is plantar fasciitis (PF). Patients feel severe pain in the first step they take after sitting for a long time or getting up and walking in the morning, and this pain is triggered by stretching the plantar fascia and carrying loads. 2 Studies have indicated that foot pain and stiffness are between 18% and 63%. 3 The plantar fascia is considered to be the result of… Show more

“…However, in the process of practical application, due to the lack of quantitative measurement of image features and the difference of people's visual perception, the visual evaluation under the guidance of ultrasound is time-consuming, and the accuracy is still affected by the doctor's clinical experience [ 9 ]. With the development of AI in the medical field, more AI technologies are applied in medical intelligence decision diagnosis.…”

“…There are some shortcomings, such as inaccurate location of the treatment target, too much peeling, or insufficient loosening, which is very easy to cause unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissue [ 8 ]. With the development of ultrasound medicine, musculoskeletal ultrasound can accurately provide the location and qualitative judgment of soft tissue lesions and can clearly show plantar metatarsal fascia, calcaneal tubercle, long metatarsal ligament, flexor digitorum brevis, tibial nerve, posterior tibial artery, and hyperplastic bone spur [ 9 ]. PF can be diagnosed when calcaneal tubercle bone shows olecranon-like high echo, metatarsal fascia thickness exceeding 4 mm, localized thickening, hypoechoic, or calcified focus formation.…”

“…Having said that, some studies focused on other pathologies and conditions in which these bandages were used with other adjuvant techniques, such as the placement of plantar support with reinforcement of the internal longitudinal arch [4], the application of ultrasound [6] of shock waves [37] or stretching of the posterior musculature of the lower extremities [5]. Finally, Bahar-Ozdemir and Atan [37] introduced kinesiotape using the low-dye tape technique under the name kinesio low-dye tape and compared it with shock waves and a placebo. In some cases, the available studies had a high risk of bias or low methodological quality [17].…”

“…An important limitation to be noted is that therapy with tape is not considered a treatment that resolves plantar fasciitis by itself, and clinicians usually combine this solution with other options, as supported in the literature. For instance, the placement of a plantar support with reinforcement of the internal longitudinal arch [4], the application of ultrasound [6], shock waves [37], or the stretching of the musculature of the lower extremities [5], among others. Yet, one strength of this study has been to demonstrate its usefulness and efficacy in reducing pain in an acute phase, regardless of whether or not the tape is combined with another therapy.…”

“…The interventions for the PHP group included selected conservative therapies that have been shown to be effective for PHP in previous reports. Specifically, physiotherapy consisted of stretching the plantar fascia [ 14 ], training the plantar intrinsic muscles [ 15 , 16 ], strength training the plantar flexor ankle musculature [ 17 , 18 ], taping [ 19 , 20 ], and ultrasound therapy [ 21 ]. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy was also administered to patients who desired it.…”
