Aprovado em 14/07/05 Artigo de Revisão RESUMOA relação entre morfologia facial, respiração bucal e distúrbios respiratórios do sono vem sendo discutida, mas ainda não tem suporte científico. Os objetivos desse artigo são: fazer uma atualização do conhecimento sobre a relação entre respiração bucal, distúrbios respiratórios do sono e determinadas más-oclusões; enfatizar a importância da interdisciplinaridade na busca de melhor prognóstico e estabilidade de tratamento, tanto na correção dos distúrbios respiratórios do sono como na correção das más-oclusões. SUMMARYThe relationship between facial morphology oral breathing and sleep breathing disorder has been discussed, but the relation does not have been supported scientifically yet. The article's objectives are: actualize the knowledge about the relationship between oral breathing, sleep breathing disorder and several malocclusions; to emphasize the importance of the treatment among the several disciplines looking for the best prognostic and treatment stability, so much in the correction of the disturbances of the sleep as in the relationship of the malocclusion

Aims and objectives:A thorough knowledge about dimensions, volume and position of tongue is important during diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion. This study was aimed at providing a baseline data for dimensions and position of tongue in skeletal and dental Class I relationship. Materials and methods:Data regarding tongue length, height and position of tongue was obtained from records of healthy normodivergent South Indian adult patients with skeletal and dental Class I relationship (30 males and 30 females). Mean and standard deviation was done using t-test. Sexual differentiation was tested using student t-test. Unpaired t-test was used to compare the parameters with other reported studies. Levene's test for equality of variance and t-test for equality of means was also done.Results: Average tongue length was 73.16 mm for males and 70.72 mm for females. Average tongue height was 36.92 mm for males and 35 mm for females. In male, tongue was positioned 8.04 mm away from palate and 13.04 mm away from the posterior pharyngeal wall whereas in female, it was positioned 7.92 mm away from palate and 15.64 mm away from the posterior pharyngeal wall. Conclusion:No statistically significant difference in tongue length and height was found between males and females. Additionally, it was observed that in females, the tongue was situated more anteriorly and occupied a higher position in the palatal dome as compared to males. Results of this study will help in understanding the role of tongue in etiology of malocclusion and its application in orthodontics.

Objective: To examine inconsistencies in the differential diagnosis of open bite. Materials and Methods: Using visual judgments, a total of 77 anterior open-bite cases in the postpubertal growth period were grouped as either morphogenetic, functional, or combination. The same sample was also grouped as either hyperdivergent, normodivergent, or hypodivergent using mandibular-plane angle and conventional cephalometry. Kappa analysis was used to test the agreement between the 2 methods of evaluation, and2 tests were used to analyze the distribution of cephalometrically grouped hyperdivergent, normodivergent, and hypodivergent cases among the visually assessed morphogenetic, functional and combination groups and vice versa. A score of 0.343 indicated a weak agreement between visual judgment and cephalometric methods of evaluation (P Ͻ .001). Results: Despite the expectation that cases evaluated as hyperdivergent using cephalometry would be visually evaluated as morphogenetic, more than half of the cases assessed as hyperdivergent were in fact classified as functional. Conclusions: These findings highlight the inadequacy of relying solely on cephalometric evaluation to classify open bite.
