In this study, rare earth (RE) metal doped ZrO2 was prepared by a surfactant-assisted coprecipitation/hydrothermal crystallization method and used to load Co as catalyst for the hydrogenation of aromatic carbonyl compounds in water. Furfural was hydrogenated to furfural alcohol in water with up to 95 mol % yield over Co/ZrLa0.2O x at 40 °C, 2 MPa H2 in 10 h. The doping of rare earth metal oxide has three advantages: (I) it promotes the ZrO2 to reach a small-sized, stable, and high-activity tetragonal phase zirconia and thus lead to a high specific surface area for metal loading; (II) it interacts with Co to reach an ultrasmall average particle size of 1.1 nm; and (III) it modifies the ZrO2 surface to increase the amount of acidic sites for the adsorption of carbonyl feedstock. The adsorption experiment indicated a tight interaction between not only the carrier and CO bond but also the Co clusters and CO bond, which were of benefit for the hydrogenation of carbonyl groups. The surfactant addition during the carrier preparation improves the strong metal–support interactions (SMSI) to promote Co dispersion and stability. Various rare earth metals including La, Pr, Nd, and Ce could modify ZrO2 with a similar mechanism. The as-prepared Co catalyst could also catalyze the selective hydrogenation of various aromatic aldehydes and ketones (such as 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, benzaldehyde, and acetophenone) in water, and 100% yield to corresponding alcohols was achieved. The catalyst remained stable and showed little deactivation during the recycling tests. This study not only presented a high-efficient, low-cost, and stable catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of various aromatic aldehydes and ketones but also give rise to an understanding of rare earth metal oxide doped ZrO2 supported nano Co ternary catalysts.

In this work, three types of alumina‐supported bimetallic Ni−Cu catalysts [Ni−Cu/commercial non‐ordered mesoporous alumina (CMA), Ni−Cu/ordered MA (OMA), and Ni−Cu−OMA] were prepared via different fabrication strategies and investigated in the conversion of levulinic acid (LA) into γ‐valerolactone and 2‐methyltetrahydrofuran (2‐MTHF). This study employed characterization techniques and reactions to reveal the effects of the fabrication strategy on the activities of the catalysts. It was observed that the catalysts constructed on OM supports (Ni−Cu/OMA and Ni−Cu−OMA) displayed superior catalytic performance compared to those constructed on CM supports (Ni−Cu/CMA). Specifically, Ni−Cu−OMA, which was fabricated via the one‐pot evaporation‐induced self‐assembly strategy, exhibited the best catalytic performance, achieving a complete conversion of LA and a high selectivity of 73.0 % toward 2‐MTHF in a solvent‐free reaction environment. The promising activity of Ni−Cu−OMA was ascribed to the well‐dispersed active sites within the framework of the support, the enhanced metal‐support interaction, and the highly efficient exploitation of the synergistic effect between Ni and Cu. Detailed post‐characterization techniques were also employed to highlight the outstanding stability of Ni−Cu−OMA.

Catalytic Reforming of Oxygenates: State of the Art and Future Prospects

This Review describes recent advances in the design, synthesis, reactivity, selectivity, structural, and electronic properties of the catalysts for reforming of a variety of oxygenates (e.g., from simple monoalcohols to higher polyols, then to sugars, phenols, and finally complicated mixtures like bio-oil). A comprehensive exploration of the structure-activity relationship in catalytic reforming of oxygenates is carried out, assisted by state-of-the-art characterization techniques and computational tools. Critical emphasis has been given on the mechanisms of these heterogeneous-catalyzed reactions and especially on the nature of the active catalytic sites and reaction pathways. Similarities and differences (reaction mechanisms, design and synthesis of catalysts, as well as catalytic systems) in the reforming process of these oxygenates will also be discussed. A critical overview is then provided regarding the challenges and opportunities for research in this area with a focus on the roles that systems of heterogeneous catalysis, reaction engineering, and materials science can play in the near future. This Review aims to present insights into the intrinsic mechanism involved in catalytic reforming and provides guidance to the development of novel catalysts and processes for the efficient utilization of oxygenates for energy and environmental purposes.
