Background: To critically evaluate the effects of massage therapy on cancer pain. Methods: Nine Chinese and English databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, SCOPUS, Web of Science core, China Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and VIP) were systematically searched from the inception of databases to November 2022 for randomized controlled trials. According to Cochrane Collaboration, 2 reviewers independently assessed the risk of bias and extracted data from the included studies. All analyses were performed with Review Manager 5.4. Results: Thirteen randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis, containing 1000 patients (498 in the massage therapy group and 502 in the control group). Massage therapy could significantly relieve cancer pain in patients (standardized mean difference = −1.16, 95% confidence interval [−1.39, −0.93], P < .00001), especially those in the perioperative period and those with hematological malignancies. Foot reflexology and hand acupressure had a moderate effect on cancer pain relief, with hand acupressure being more effective. Massage duration of 10 to 30 minutes and a program length of ≥1 week had a better effect and could significantly relieve pain. The occurrence of adverse events was reported in 4 of the 13 studies, all of which were no adverse events. Conclusions: Massage therapy can be used as a complementary alternative therapy to relieve cancer pain in patients with hematological malignancies, breast cancer, and cancers of the digestive system. It is suggested that chemotherapy patients use foot reflexology, and perioperative period patients use hand acupressure. A massage duration of 10 to 30 minutes and a program length of ≥1 week is recommended to achieve better effects.

Objective: This study was envisaged to scientifically analyze the efficacy of the massage chair in reducing the fatigue using the heart rate variability (HRV) and fatigue self-assessment scale (FSAS) in a randomized clinical trial. Methods: 240 fatigue volunteers were divided into the massage chair intervention group and the control group using a completely randomized method. The kneading, pressing, tapping, and flapping techniques in the smart massage chair were used to intervene on the volunteers. The FSAS, HRV, and blood oxygen saturation changes were observed before and after the intervention, and the effect of massage in the smart massage chair to relieve fatigue was explored. Results: The overall exhaustion, mental fatigue, and physical fatigue scores of the FSAS were statistically significant (P < 0.05) before and after the intervention. After the intervention, the overall fatigue, mental fatigue, and physical fatigue scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group. The HRVhf, HRVlf, and HRVlf/hf in HRV before and after the intervention between the two groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05), and the HRVhf values of the two groups were significantly increased after the intervention. The HRVlf value was significantly reduced, and the HRVlf value of the control group was increased. After the intervention, the HRVlf/hf value of the experimental group was significantly reduced, and the HRVlf/hf value of the control group increased. There were no significant differences in the HR and SpO2 values (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The massaging approach of the smart massage chair significantly reduced the tiredness scale score of the volunteers, reduced the sympathetic nerve excitability, and increased parasympathetic nerve excitability. The results indicate that the smart massage chair can be used as an effective method for short-term fatigue recovery.

Effects of esketamine on postoperative fatigue syndrome in patients after laparoscopic resection of gastric carcinoma: a randomized controlled trial

Background Despite the implementation of various postoperative management strategies, the prevalence of postoperative fatigue syndrome (POFS) remains considerable among individuals undergoing laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. While the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor antagonist esketamine has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing sleep quality and alleviating postoperative pain, its impact on POFS remains uncertain. Consequently, the objective of this study is to ascertain whether perioperative administration of esketamine can effectively mitigate the occurrence of POFS in patients undergoing laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. Methods A total of 133 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer were randomly assigned to two groups, namely the control group (Group C) (n = 66) and the esketamine group (Group E) (n = 67), using a double-blind method. The Group C received standardized anesthesia, while the Group E received esketamine in addition to the standardized anesthesia. The primary outcome measure assessed was the Christensen fatigue score at 3 days after the surgical procedure, while the secondary outcomes included the disparities in postoperative fatigue, postoperative pain, sleep quality, and adverse reactions between the two groups. Results In the group receiving esketamine, the fatigue scores of Christensen on the third day after surgery were significantly lower compared to the Group C (estimated difference, -0.70; 95% CI, -1.37 to -0.03; P = 0.040). Additionally, there was a significant decrease in the occurrence of fatigue in the Group E compared to the Group C on the first and third days following surgery (P < 0.05). Also, compared to individuals who had distal gastrectomy, those who had entire gastrectomy demonstrated a higher degree of postoperative tiredness reduction with esketamine. Furthermore, the Group E exhibited reduced postoperative pain and improved sleep in comparison to the Group C. Both groups experienced similar rates of adverse events. Conclusions The use of esketamine during the perioperative period can improve POFS after laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, without adverse reactions.
