Effects of a Telehealth Care Coordination Intervention on Perceptions of Health Care by Caregivers of Children With Medical Complexity: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Introduction The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) telehealth care coordination for children with medical complexity (CMC) on family caregiver perceptions of health care. Videoconferencing or video consultation was the most frequently used tool (14 studies 227,228,233,235,236,238,[240][241][242][243][244]246,248,253 ), followed by e-mails or web messaging systems (13 studies 223,[229][230][231][232]234,[237][238][239]245,247,249,250,254,256 ). “…While there are no current standards for the educational preparation or core functions of the care coordinator in the health care home (McAllister, et al, 2007; Wise, et al, 2007), improved outcomes for children have been demonstrated in studies of advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) delivered care coordination within the health care home (Cady et al, 2015; Looman, et al, 2015; National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, 2015). TeleFamilies examined the effectiveness of an APRN in an established health care home setting coordinating the care of CMC using telehealth technology compared to usual care and telephone triage.…”

“…Telepractice has been well-established as an effective way to deliver tertiary-level medical and nursing services to CMC (131,141,144,(162)(163)(164)(165)(166)(167)(168)(169)(170). However, there is limited evidence to support telepractice for speech pathology management of complex paediatric patients.…”
