Effects of a standard transfer exercise program on transfer quality and activities of daily living for transfer-dependent spinal cord injury patients

Abstract: [Purpose] The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of a standard transfer exercise program on the transfer quality and activities of daily living (ADL) in wheelchair-dependent spinal cord injury patients. [Subjects and Methods] We randomly divided 22 patients into 2 groups. During the intervention period, one group received treatment with both conventional physical therapy and a standard sitting pivot transfer exercise program (experimental group, n=12) and the other group was managed solely with … Show more

“…Capitalizing on the redundancy of fascicles in the proximal sciatic nerve that contributed to toe motion, we were able to perform ETE nerve transfers to the either the superior or inferior gluteal nerve. The ability to weightshift is important to reduce the risk of pressure sores in patients with tetraplegia, [30][31][32][33] and independent transfers facilitate functional mobility and performance of activities of daily living. 33,34 This is particularly important for children with AFM who often have proximal upper extremity weakness that further limits weight-shift and transfer abilities.…”

“…In addition, immobility and altered sensitivity generate a risk of pressure ulcers, for which position changes must be made frequently. In the case of transfer (for example, to or from the bed, the chair, the bathroom), this is carried out by the patient or by the caregiver for the development of the activities of daily living of the person with a spinal cord injury (27). Neurogenic bowel dysfunction also alters colorectal motility, transit time, and emptying, often leading to constipation.…”

“…Esses estudos demonstram principalmente que, a partir dos programas de avaliação e intervenção, os usuários de cadeiras de rodas apresentam melhoras significativas em relação ao manejo do próprio corpo e movimentações na cadeira de rodas, bem como redução da ocorrência de quedas e aumento da independência para realização de transferências e em atividades de vida diária (DYER et al, 2008;RICE et al, 2013;YOU et al, 2017).…”
