Effects of a Protic Ionic Liquid on the Reaction Pathway during Non-Aqueous Sol–Gel Synthesis of Silica: A Raman Spectroscopic Investigation

Abstract: The reaction pathway during the formation of silica via a two-component “non-aqueou” sol-gel synthesis is studied by in situ time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. This synthetic route is followed with and without the addition of the protic ionic liquid 1-ethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (C2HImTFSI) in order to investigate its effect on the reaction pathway. We demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy is suitable to discriminate between different silica intermediates, which are produced and consumed a… Show more

“…Hence, the challenge of this approach consists in the optimization of the balance among stiffness, strength and toughness. 13,14 Various imidazolium-based IL have been used as catalysts for the sol-gel process, [15][16][17] silica morphology controllers 16,[18][19][20] and epoxy-silica compatibilizers. 7 Thus, the need of an effective method for producing highly dispersed filler, forming strong interphase bonding, is crucial.…”

“…The resulting materials, with PIL concentrations X ranging from 5t o3 0% (for which X is the ratio of the mass of [BIm][TfO] perm ass of POE), display attractives tructural, thermal, and mechanical properties that have remained unchanged for four years after their initial synthesis. [47,48] In the near future we plan to develop analoguem aterials by using an on-hydrolytic sol-gel route.…”
