Effects of a parallel-arm randomized controlled weight loss pilot study on biological and psychosocial parameters of overweight and obese breast cancer survivors

Abstract: BackgroundWeight gain often occurs after breast cancer (BC) diagnosis and obesity along with sedentary behavior are associated with increased risk of BC recurrence and mortality. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether a significant weight loss, of approximately 10%, would lead to beneficial changes in biomarkers associated with cancer and/or cancer recurrence, and quality of life (QOL) in overweight and obese BC survivors.MethodsThis parallel-arm study took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota… Show more

“…Furthermore, BMI was significantly reduced by 3.01% in the CRS group and 2.15% in the CRP group compared to the control, and this may correlate with a better quality of life. Arikawa [ 38 ] and wahnefried [ 39 ] in different studies approved the improved quality of life in breast cancer survivors following a weight loss. It seems that weight loss is so effective in these patients that it is better to be included in the lymphedema treatment protocols.…”

“…Weight loss interventions and dietary education after breast cancer diagnosis can help patients to improve their diet quality, achieve desired weight loss, increase their cardiorespiratory fitness, and improve their overall quality of life, fatigue, body image, and lower incidence of comorbidities and favor changes in biomarkers related to breast cancer risk and prognosis (e.g., blood glucose, blood lipids, CRP, DNA methylation) [113, 155, 160, 164167]. In addition, physical activity during and after treatment can help patients to manage treatment side effects, reduce cancer-related fatigue, improve quality of life and functional capacity, promote alterations in bio-markers, and potentially enhance the overall prognosis and survival of breast cancer patients and survivors [168, 169].…”

On the other hand, in one study, adhering to a strict dietary intervention resulted in decreased sleep quality in breast cancer patients, indicating that changing dietary behaviors can be both challenging and stressful [160]. …”
