“…However, the potential of MLDA law is far from exhausted. Studies continually document the ease with which underage youth around the world obtain alcohol in commercial settings despite the legal drinking age (Dent et al, 2005;Gosselt et al, 2007;Huckle et al, 2007;Paschall et al, 2007;Romano et al, 2007;Rossow et al, 2008;Geidne and Eriksson, 2009;Holmila et al, 2010;Gosselt et al, 2011;Schelleman-Offermans et al, 2012;Mulder et al, 2013;Schelleman-Offermans et al, 2014). In some trial-purchase studies, minors succeeded in buying alcohol in more than half of all purchase attempts (Rossow et al, 2008).…”

“…In this briefing, the mystery-shopping "rules" for the study were explained, which were: (1) you must buy the alcohol yourself, so no shoulder tapping (asking someone else to buy) or stealing; (2) you may not offend vendors; (3) you are allowed to enter each of the five outlets up to three times; and (4) you may only carry the alcoholic beverages; shopping carts are not allowed. Furthermore, and in contrast to previous studies with strict purchase protocols (e.g., Gosselt et al, 2007;Gosselt et al, 2011;Van Hoof et al, 2012;Van Hoof et al, 2015), the mystery shoppers were now instructed to act as they probably would have in real life. In their attempt to purchase as many alcohol-containing beverages as possible, they were instructed to purchase alcohol either alone or with a small group of underage mystery shoppers, and to follow their own strategies.…”

“…In a recent study, 100% of the interviewed sales personnel in supermarkets, 99% of the personnel in liquor stores and 93% of the vendors in bars claim to comply with the age limit for alcohol sales (Bieleman, Kruize, & Zimmerman, 2010). Decoy compliance studies, conducted during a four-year period and consisting of hundreds of underage mystery shopping alcohol purchase attempts, however, showed an average Dutch compliance level of 15% (Gosselt, Van Hoof , Baas, & De Jong, 2011).…”

“…The interviews reported here were part of a larger study (Van Hoof, Gosselt, Baas, & De Jong, 2011) that took place within one region in the Netherlands, consisting of nine municipalities that contained approximately 350 alcohol outlets in total.…”
