Effects of a Muscle Strength Reinforcement Exercise Program for Older Adult Patients on Hemodialysis

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine effects of a muscle strength reinforcement exercise program (MSREP) for older adult patients with hemodialysis (OAPHD) which was designed to improve health status and quality of life of these older adult patients. “…In patients receiving hemodialysis who participated in the AVF stenosis prevention program, upper extremity muscle strength showed a synergistic effect with time, with scores increasing by 3.36 points after 4 weeks and 6.18 points after 8 weeks. These results were higher than the 0.9-point increase in the study by Lee [ 32 ], in which muscle-strengthening exercises were used to increase the patency of blood vessels in the same participants, resulting in a 1.79-point decrease in the control group. Additionally, Heo [ 24 ] reported that, as grip strength improved, the hand, elbow, and shoulder joints also showed higher muscle strength.…”

“…Family caregivers experience considerable physical, psychological, emotional, social, and financial difficulties, which are often collectively referred to as the caregiver burden (Etters, Goodall, & Harrison, 2008;Pinquart & Sörensen, 2007;Schulz et al, 2004). Research studies in Korea also have reported that Korean family caregivers of older adults experienced several similar difficulties; indicating physical problems including headache, chronic fatigue (Lee, Lim, Kim, Cho., & Ko, 2011), psychological problems including depression, anxiety, and strain (Lee, Seo, & Ahn, 2003), relational conflicts among family members (Song & Choe, 2007), and financial difficulties (Song & Choe, 2007). Thus, family caregivers of older adults are exposed to high risk to experience serious health effects of family caregiving throughout the psychological, physical, and social areas of personal lives.…”
