Effects of a glass-ionomer cement on the remineralization of occlusal caries: an in situ study

Abstract: This work evaluated the remineralization of demineralized enamel of pits and fissures of human third molars sealed with a glass ionomer cement (Fuji IX, GC Corporation -Japan) or with a Bis-GMA sealant (DeltonDentsply). Ten volunteers participated in this in situ study that consisted of two thirty-day periods using intra-oral devices, with a week's interval in between. Four experimental treatment procedures and one control were randomly assigned to the volunteers' specimens: Group I, no treatment, control; Gro… Show more

“…The pattern of fluoride release from Fuji VII was consistent, with an initial high release followed by low prolonged leakage before a return to the baseline value after 1 year 11) . Release of fluoride over the long term could enhance the cariostatic ability of the surrounding enamel, and increase the acid resistance of the demineralized enamel in the fissures 33) . Second, children were treated with 6,000 ppm fluoridated foam at every clinic recall and used 600 ppm fluoridated toothpaste twice every day during the experimental period.…”

“…1,2,3,4 Glassionomer cements (GICs) have been used for over 20 years in dentistry as important tools in caries prevention. 1,4,5,6 Certain GIC properties indicate that it is a "smart material"; these include ion exchange and recharge between conventional GICs and the external environment, a thermal expansion coefficient similar to teeth, and chemical adhesion to tooth enamel and dentin.…”
