Effects of a dietary antioxidant blend and vitamin E on growth performance, oxidative status, and meat quality in broiler chickens fed a diet high in oxidants

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of a dietary antioxidant blend (AB) and vitamin E on performance, oxidative status, and meat quality. Cobb 500 male broilers (n = 1,200, d 0) were randomly distributed into 6 treatments with 10 replicate pens. Treatments included 1) HO: high oxidant diet, vitamin E at 10 IU/kg, 3% oxidized soybean oil, 3% polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) source; 2) VE: the HO diet with vitamin E at 200 IU/kg; 3) AOX: the HO diet with AB at 135 mg/kg; 4) VE+AOX: the HO diet wit… Show more

“…For instance, the results obtained for grape and olive pomace, olive leaves, grape seeds, marigold, cinnamon, sage, green tea, tannin, thyme, and rosemary extracts, as well as different mixtures of polyphenol sources, can either increase (Eid et al, 2003;Tavarez et al, 2011;Lu et al, 2014;Bravo et al, 2014), decrease, or have no effect on productivity (Goni et al, 2007;Gurbuz et al, 2010;Brenes et al, 2010;Rezar and Salobir, 2014).…”

“…It is essential for the health of animals submitted to stressful rearing conditions, and it used as a feed additive in broilers diets (Khan et al, 2012;Lu et al 2014aLu et al , 2014b. However, Xiao et al (2013) suggested that there are functional redundancies between VitE and other natural compounds in broiler diets.…”

“…However, with the growing evidence of the potential of vitamins to be used as so-called "nutraceuticals" to improve poultry health and wellbeing, more parameters, such as antioxidant status, bone quality, immune response, and behavior, have been used to assess vitamin needs (Habibian et al, 2014;Lu et al, 2014;Saunders-Blades and Korver, 2015). Most vitamins, especially fat-soluble vitamins, are deposited in the eggs in proportion to diet inclusion (Leeson and Caston, 2003), and subsequently affect the embryonic development and post-hatch life of progeny chicks (Surai, 2000;Lin et al, 2005;Driver et al, 2006).…”
