Effects of a 24-week course of interferon-α therapy after curative treatment of hepatitis C virus-associated hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Most intrahepatic recurrences of HCV-related HCC occurred during persistent viral infection. Eradication of HCV is essential for the prevention of HCC recurrence and improvement of survival.

“…Incorporation of data from the cohort studies paradoxically had a negative impact on the predicted efficacy of interferon therapy. These findings appeared to contradict the results from the individual cohort studies because most of them reported positive results [17,[22][23][24]. The most likely explanation for this discrepancy is that these studies had other features that are associated with better RFS after interferon therapy.…”

“…1. Thirteen studies (9 randomized trials and 4 cohort studies) were eligible for meta-analysis (Table 1) [8][9][10][11][12][13][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. Detailed description of the included studies was listed in Supplementary Table 2.…”

“…5,12 Concerning patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhosis, viral eradication may influence the outcome after local ablation of HCC, as suggested by case reports but, so far, poorly illustrated in large cohorts. 13,14 Furthermore, tumor parameters such as size and number of nodules or local recurrence are either contradictory or poorly evaluated. 3-6,8,18 -20 Thus, in previous series, complete ablation rates for larger HCCs (3-5 cm) after RFA seem unfavorable, ranging from 61.3% to 82.5%.…”

“…Although there have been several studies showing that postoperative IFN treatment improves the prognosis of CHC patients in relation to HCC, and IFN treatment prevented CHC patients from developing initial HCC [13,[22][23][24], there has been little information about the prognosis after initial treatment for HCC after the achievement of SVRs, the characteristics of HCC from SVR patients, and investigations using excised liver tissue. Therefore, 26 CHC patients who had received only curative hepatectomy were selected in our study.…”
