Effects of 90% Oxygen Exposure on the Ultrastructure of the Tracheal Epithelium in Rabbits

Abstract: Numerous signs of pathological alteration were induced in the pseudostratified ciliated epithelium by a 2-hour exposure to 90% oxygen. The ciliary border injury was especially conspicuous, the mean number of cilia in a given area was significantly (p < 0.005) reduced and morphological signs of impaired self-cleaning ability were revealed. Ciliated cells were severely injured showing apical blebbing and swelling of cell organelles. The reaction of goblet cells to exposure to O2 was rapid discharge of… Show more

“…For untreated controls we used 3 rabbits whose tracheal epithelium was described in detail in our pre vious paper [2]. In the healthy rabbits the trachea was lined with a pseudostratified columnar epithelium, the ciliary border consisted of 9.7 ± 0.3/p.mr regularly arranged cilia.…”

“…As untreated controls served 3 rabbits whose tracheal epithelium was described in detail in our previous study [2]. The rabbits were intubated under thiopen tal anaesthesia and BAL was performed by threefold injection and withdrawal of 10 ml of isotonic saline at 37°C.…”

“…Aer 2-hour exposure to 90% oxygen, the ciliated cells were especially severely injured (Konradova et al, 1988). The target cells for the 96-hour action of high temperature, 100% humidity and 35-37% oxygen were the secretory elements in the airway epithelium.…”

“…We demonstrated that short exposure to high concentration (90%) of oxygen evoked severe pathological alteration in the tracheal pseudostratified ciliated epithelium. An increase in humidity had only mild effect on the resulting lesion of the epithelium (Konradova et al, 1988). We therefore decided to investigate the reaction of the tracheal epithelium exposed to mild hyperoxia for longer period.…”
