Effects of 50 Hertz-1 mT magnetic field on action potential in isolated rat sciatic nerve

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate possible effects of 50 Hz-1 mT magnetic field (MF) on action potential in isolated rat sciatic nerve. We used 16 Wistar rats in the study. They were divided into control (n ¼ 10) and MF (n ¼ 6) groups. The sciatic nerve of left legs in the MF group was exposed to 50 Hz-1 mT MF for 30 min by using a Helmholtz applicator and then action potentials in control and experimental groups were recorded extracellularly. Maximum amplitude and hyperpolarization time and action pote… Show more

“…We assumed that the magnetic field vector was always parallel to platinum grates in the experimental setup of NCV. Similar orientations in the same Helmholtz setups were used in previous studies [Azanza, 1989;Calvo and Azanza, 1999;Coskun et al, 2011].…”

“…In the rest of exposure studies investigating the function of the nervous system, researchers reported that PF-MF exposure may cause changes in brain activity in humans [Cvetkovic and Cosic, 2009] and rabbits [Marino et al, 2003]. In addition, some studies showed that 50 Hz MF decreased electrical activity of axons belonging to peripheral nervous system in humans [Comlekci and Coskun, 2012] and rats [Coskun et al, 2011]. In the literature, a large number of PF-MF exposure studies on autonomous nervous system have been performed in humans.…”

“…In another study on mice, the mice were fi rst trained to be rewarded and then let under the infl uence of electric and magnetic fi elds. Compared to those who were not affected by the effects of these fi elds, a decrease in response rate is observed (4,5).…”

“…Previous research showed that ELF MF can affect metabolism and nervous system activity of snail Helix sp (Calvo and Azanza 1999a, 1999b, Pérez Bruzón et al 2004, Moghadam et al 2008, Partsvania et al 2008, Nikolić et al 2010, as well as neuroendocrine system of Lymantria dispar (Ilijin et al 2011a(Ilijin et al , 2011b and earthworm Eisenia foetida (Banovački and Matavulj 2013). Furthermore, ELF MF influence the structures and function of the central and peripheral nervous systems of different mammalian species (Lai et al 1993, Bell et al 1994, Janać et al 2009, Coskun et al 2011.…”
