Effects of 2-chlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol on an activated sludge sequencing batch reactor

Abstract: In the present work, the effect of 2-chlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol on the performance of a sequencing batch reactor operated with suspended municipal recycle activated sludge (RAS) in terms of total carbon and total nitrogen removal is presented. The total carbon removal achieved ranged in 80-100% and total nitrogen removal in 10-84%. The results showed that chlorophenols did not inhibit either the activated sludge growth or the total carbon removal significantly. However, inhibition is observed in to… Show more

“…The total carbon content was 1080 mg L -1 , 95% organic and 5% inorganic. It is a typical non-toxic and biodegradable wastewater that has been used as substrate to examine the effect of the presence of toxic compounds on the efficiency of wastewater treatment technologies [26,27]. Fresh stock solutions were prepared every three days.…”

“…In a recent study with a similar synthetic wastewater, Doskaliyev et al 46 . evaluated the influence of air striping by using SBR, and after 21 h of intensive aeration, they reported 43.9% TC removal, as well as 29.4% and 10.5% removal of the 2‐chlorophenol and 2,4,6‐trichlorophenol, respectively.…”

“…To evaluate the impact of pharmaceuticals on the efficiency of biological treatment of wastewater, the exact compositions of the synthetic wastewater was derived from the average concentration of actual municipal wastewaters 43,44 and was used in the previous works 10,45,46 . The average TC, TN, and ammonium concentrations in the final feed solution were 243.5 ± 49.8, 28.4 ± 5.7, and 11.4 ± 3.6 mg/L, respectively.…”

“…The stock solution is prepared for each experiment including (potassium hydrogen carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, Bacterial peptone, Glucose anhydrous, and Beef extract broth) as shown in Table 1. A typical biodegradable and nontoxic wastewater has been utilized as a substrate to measure its effect of treatment methods (Wilson et al, 1997;Doskaliyev et al, 2018). Under various operational conditions, TUT was used in a photo reactor to analyze synthetic wastewater with different concentrations of total organic carbon.…”
