Effects induced by a 50 Hz electromagnetic field and doxorubicin on Walker-256 carcinosarcoma growth and hepatic redox state in rats

Abstract: We compare the effects of an extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) with the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) on tumor growth and the hepatic redox state in Walker-256 carcinosarcoma-bearing rats. Animals were divided into five groups with one control (no tumor) and four tumor-bearing groups: no treatment, DOX, DOX combined with EMF and EMF. While DOX and DOX + EMF provided greater inhibition of tumor growth, treatment with EMF alone resulted in some level of antitumor effect (p < .05). Su… Show more

“…Significant increases in ROS levels have been found to influence the hepatic redox state [256] and were observed in several cell lines just after the end of ELF EMF exposure [213,[257][258][259][260][261][262][263][264][265]. ELF EMF exposure also elevates the expression of RNS and O 2…”

“…For instance, ROS are well-known to play a critical role in signaling events that initiate apoptosis. The fact that electromagnetic fields modulate ROS levels could point to the potential use of IMH, when locally applied to a tumor, to increase antitumor activity and decrease the toxicity of DOX in other tissues [ 33 , 61 , 62 ]. Programmed cell death poses a barrier that restricts cancer cell survival and dissemination, wherein early apoptosis facilitates phagocytosis by macrophages without releasing pro-inflammatory cellular components, as opposed to necrosis [ 63 , 64 ].…”

“…The ability of iron to stimulate ROS production in cytochrome P450 pathways is clearly important for an increased risk of toxicity (Veith & Moorthy, 2018). EMFs were applied to modulate the hepatic redox state and alleviate DOX‐induced liver toxicity in Walker‐256 carcinosarcoma‐bearing rats (V. E. Orel, Krotevych, et al, 2021). While CMF action alone improved MNCs targeting to the liver, their delivery to the hepatocellular carcinoma cells was affected by rapid uptake in the reticuloendothelial system (Iacobazzi et al, 2022).…”
