Effects and Mechanisms of Non-Thermal Plasma-Mediated ROS and Its Applications in Animal Husbandry and Biomedicine

et al.

Abstract: Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is an ionized gas composed of neutral and charged reactive species, electric fields, and ultraviolet radiation. NTP presents a relatively low discharge temperature because it is characterized by the fact that the temperature values of ions and neutral particles are much lower than that of electrons. Reactive species (atoms, radicals, ions, electrons) are produced in NTP and delivered to biological objects induce a set of biochemical processes in cells or tissues. NTP can mediate reacti… Show more

“…Connexins, through their main intercellular task, the exchange of small molecules and ions, might also ameliorate reactive oxygen and nitrogen species transfer and thereby cause cell death via oxidative stress, which damages membrane DNA, lipids and proteins [89]. Therefore, non-thermal plasma therapy (NTP) has potential on the function of GJs via oxidative stress reduction [90]. NTP mediates reactive oxygen species levels in an intensity-and time-dependent manner, for example, high levels of ROS mediated by NTP cause oxidative stress damage and cell death, while being the opposite in physiological levels [78,91].…”

“…Recent studies have identi ed potential advantages of non-thermal plasma treatment for bone and cartilage regeneration [5]. Acts directly on living tissue through sterilisation, coagulation, wound healing and tissue regeneration [6][7].Not only that, non-thermal plasma has also been reported to lead to better mechanical properties of materials by surface treatment of inorganic particles [8]. In this context we can consider the use of non-thermal plasma technology for the functionalisation of oral implant biomaterials.Studies have been reported that non-thermal plasma can activate inorganic bovine bone and improve its osteogenic properties in a short period of time [9].…”
