Effects and barriers to deployment of telehealth wellness programs for chronic patients across 3 European countries

Abstract: The study results suggest the potential of the ICS-ICT Barcelona's approach to enhance COPD management. Moreover, it allowed identification of the factors limiting transferability to the other sites. The research prompts the need for large multicenter trials specifically designed to assess effectiveness, efficiencies and transferability of this type of intervention.

“…16 The following were the inclusion criteria: (i) diagnosis of COPD according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) criteria; 17 (ii) clinically stable conditions with optimized pharmacological treatment; (iii) no history of lower respiratory track infection and/or COPD exacerbation within 6 weeks prior to initial measurements; (iv) no previous participation in a PR programme for at least 12 months prior to the initial evaluation; and (v) normal Hb values (≥13 g/dL in males and ≥12 g/dL in females) at the time of the evaluation. The following were the exclusion criteria: (i) current anaemia treatment; (ii) suspicion or evidence of blood loss (gastrointestinal, menstrual or urinary); (iii) polycythaemia (Hb levels >17 and >15 g/dL for males and females, respectively); (iv) cardiovascular, skeletal-muscle or neurological disorders precluding the practice of exercise; and (v) diagnosis of cancer or haematological disorders.…”

“…The characteristics of the inte-516 grated care services in which the system was used and a summary 517 of main MAST assessment outcomes are summarized in the follow- 518 ing Table 1 and presented in more detail in Appendix A.1. The role of the personal health channel, as a simple and robust off-535 line ICT support to enhance patient adherence to the program [28], 536 should be highlighted. The service requires further validation 537 through a large cost-effectiveness study before being considered 538 as candidate for regional deployment.…”
