Effector T lymphocytes in well-nourished and malnourished infected children

Abstract: SummaryThe mechanisms involved in impaired immunity in malnourished children are not well understood. T cells in MNI children may represent an ineffective response to infection. Levels of effector T cells in children with gastrointestinal infections versus those suffering from respiratory infections were also significantly different within the WNI group. While WNI children with gastrointestinal infections had higher absolute and relative values of CD8+ , and CD8 + CD28 -T subsets, by those with respiratory in… Show more

“…Severe malnutrition has significant deleterious effect on both humoural and cell‐mediated immunity. Impaired immune function could then predispose these children to life‐threatening infections . The loss of statistical significance of the other predictors could have resulted from low statistical power associated with the relatively small number of deaths.…”

“…Similar to AIDS, PCM is associated with suppression of the antigen-specific arms of the immune system and several generalized host defense mechanisms [30]. PCM is associated with reactivation of viral infections, reversal of the T-helper/suppressor ratio [31, 32], decreased T-cell primary antibody response and memory response [33], and atrophy of the lymph tissues [34, 35]. Peripheral lymphocyte and eosinophil counts may be reduced and natural killer cells show reduced activity [36].…”

“…Moreover, CD4+ helper T cells can influence effector and memory CD8+ T cell development [20]. Previous studies have shown that the levels of helper (CD4+CD62L−) and cytotoxic (CD8+CD28−) cells are increased in children with gastrointestinal and respiratory bacterial infections compared with uninfected and malnourished children [24]. The increased number of cytotoxic CD8+CD28− cells has been linked to the stimulation of the IL-2 and IL-6 receptors, resulting in the activation and proliferation of the cells and the production of perforin and granzymes, which damage the bacterial membranes and ultimately kill the bacteria by osmotic shock or apoptosis [25,26].…”
