Effectiveness of two intranasal vaccines for the control of bovine respiratory disease in newborn beef calves: A randomized non-inferiority multicentre field trial

Abstract: Highlights Multicentre field trials with natural pathogen exposure complement challenge trials. Beef calves housed with their dams were assessed for bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Two commercial intranasal live vaccines for BRSV-bPI3V were evaluated. New Vaccine A demonstrated non-inferiority compared to benchmarked Vaccine B. Difference in BRD prevalence between Vaccines A and B was −0.4% (95% CI −1.6 to 0.8%).

“…Colostrum antibodies may protect calves for long periods (up to 6 months) against some virus (BVDV and IBR); however, they will have a short half‐life for other pathogens such as BRD bacteria, BRSV and PI3 (Fulton et al., 2004 ; Prado et al., 2006 ; Chamorro et al., 2014 ). This can be mitigated by the use of intra‐nasal vaccination against BRSV and PI3 in very young calves (Masset et al., 2020 ; Sandelin et al., 2020 ). Appropriate feeding of calves is another key aspect.…”

“…To prevent the onset of respiratory infections during the fattening period of young bulls, vaccinations targeting the main pathogens can also be used [2,18]. Currently, vaccination is carried out when the young are gathering.…”
